Winter Herd Competition 2023

24th January 2023

Winter Herd Classic Report 2023

Bringing the competition back to its true winter roots and taking place in January brought about some different challenges. This did not deter our stalwart hardy breeders who put on some tremendous displays of animals for our very capable judge Mr. Andrew Lawrie of the Grangehall herd.

Andrew spent two days casting his expert eye over some exceptional stock. The biggest contested class was the second calvers – a Tank descendant bulldozing her way to the top in the form of Arnott Jans Rhapsody, exhibited from the Crossfell Herd of John & Heidi Metcalf.

The Flo family from Stowbeck was a sight to behold I felt privileged to also be stewarding that day so I also got the pleasure of seeing this uniform family showing dairyness and strength throughout.

Jack Wilson Ewemoo Lambda Appleline will definitely be one to watch in the future she looks a promising animal destined for the show ring.

The junior heifer class was a fantastic exhibition of stock, powerful yet feminine a credit to the breeders and a positive outlook for the future with animals like this carrying the Holstein breed forward. Woodcatt Chief Fav just getting the edge on her competition.

Overall champion super six was a fabulous display of cattle from the Stowbeck herd.

Oozing class style and dairy strength throughout. Congratulations Skirwith Farms Ltd.

A huge thank you to Andrew Lawrie for taking time out of his busy schedule to judge for us, I will be forever indebted to him.

And finally a big thank you to Dodd & Co for their continued support for sponsoring the competition. We are very grateful that we are able to provide these competitions to the members.
