BORDER & LAKELAND CLUB SHOW & SALE

WEDNESDAY 20th JULY 2016

 HOLMLAND’S PLEDGE IS A TOPPER

The continued optimism within the dairy sector and the realisation that milk production is falling faster than most processors feel comfortable with resulted in trade firming again for the July Border & Lakeland club sale held at Borderway, Carlisle on Wednesday 20th July.  Trade topped at 3,100gns with the overall average up £389 on the month to £1620 with over half the sale selling for or above £1500 for one of the best consignment of heifers Borderway has saw for some considerable time.

As well as having a outstanding group of heifers on offer the sale has a number of elite pedigrees and it was Holmland Windbrook Pledge that topped the trade at 3,100gns.  She was consigned by Stephen & Trica Bell owners of the famous Holmland herd that dispersed their milking portion a number of years ago.  Pledge was a daughter of Gillette Windbrook and a daughter of the world famous ALH Polly EX92, the best brood cow of her generation.  Pledge now joins the herd of Andrew & Dan Bargh, Wood Close, Penrith.

The show was once again kindly sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent and judged by David Thomson from the Beath Holstein herd in Fife.  His overall champion went to Espland Bossman Mabel consigned by DI & AA Cannon from Appleby.  Mabel was one of the best uddered heifers to sell for many a year and sold for 2,500gns to the judge.  The Espland herd sold three heifers to average over £2000 with Espland DVD Angela selling for 1,900gns to J. Barr in Fife.

Depth of pedigree was a major factor in the third top price of the day, Holmland Cup Zandra sold for 1,950gns to H&EM Hunter, Penrith.  Zandra was a strong powerful framed heifer sired by Gillette Stanleycup and will be the ninth generation of Excellent or Very Good cows from the Ocean-View Mandel Zandra cow family.

The Snow herd of G&M Wilson Appleby consigned three fabulous heifers topping at 1,900gns for Snow Joan 14 who now joins the herd of J. Rae, Boghead Farm, Dumfries.  Joan was a daughter of Sandy-Valley Saloon.

A number of heifers sold for 1,900gns including Wormanby Gillespy Penny consigned by the 2015 Premier winning Holstein herd of the Hodgson family near Carlisle.  Penny was giving 42kg and sired by De-Su Gillespy and bred of one of the top cows in the herd, Wormanby Homerun Penny EX92 who was classified Excellent six times and produced over 100ton lifetime.  This fine heifer was purchased by the Bryson family Dykehead Farm, Lanark.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on 3rd  August and features 150 head in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale comprising of freshly calved cows and heifers, in-calf heifers, bulling heifers and heifer calves.
