The Border and Lakeland Annual Calf Show surpassed expectations this year, drawing an impressive turnout of 31 dedicated handlers and showcasing a remarkable collection of 73 calves. The event, a highlight in the B&L calendar, provided an exhilarating platform for showcasing the talents of both young handlers and calves.
This year’s show marked a significant moment of growth, with several newcomers entering the competition, bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm to the day. It was particularly heartening to witness new prefixes among the winners, indicating a vibrant future for the industry as emerging breeders make their mark.
The esteemed Izzy Laird was judge, whose keen eye for quality and experience gave us a great qualifying team for the ABAB. Izzy's encouragement to all participants fostered a supportive atmosphere throughout the day.
In the handling, the competition was fierce, showcasing the impressive skills of our young. Ellie Fisher emerged triumphant, taking home the Champion Handler title. The Reserve Champion title was awarded to Seth Davidson. Honorable mentions went to Ollie Hay.
Turning to the calf categories, a notable highlight of the show was the Champion Calf, Starlet Legend Barbara, exhibited by Will Horsley. This calf stood out impressing the judges and audience alike. The Reserve Champion calf was Crossfell Legend Erle and Honorable Mentions went to Woodcatt Latayo Erle from Woodcatt Holsteins.
