SUPER RED HEIFER TOPS AT BORDERWAY
The first Border and Lakeland show and sale of 2019 kicked off with a bang with an outstanding group of milking cows and heifers and a world class offering of embryos. Buyers travelled from across the UK to pack a busy ringside where 124 milkers topped at 2,200gns to average £1874 with 22 animals selling for or more than £2000.
The show was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent and expertly judged by Malcolm Hutchinson from the recently dispersed Bowberhill herd. Winning the senior heifer class and Overall Champion was Dunnerdale Loptimum Bo consigned by Stephen Boow from Corney Hall Farm, Millom. This perfect uddered heifer was sired by Delaberge Loptimum and was giving 33kgs, she sold for 2,150gns to Messers Prentice, Ayrshire. Another excellent uddered heifer from this home sired by Seagull-Bay Razzle also sold for 2,150gns to Messrs Rudd, Wigton.
The Reserve Champion went to the second place senior heifer consigned by S. Liddle from the Farm Organisation Company. Gildersbeck Skyfire Ivy Fire was sired by Gen-I-Beq Skyfire and bred from three generations of Excellent or Very good Red & White cows. This fancy red heifer sold for the top price of the day selling for 2,200gns to Messrs Wilkes, North Yorkshire.
The Graham family from the Heathersgill Holstein herd sold a number of outstanding heifers topping at 2,150gns for Heathersill Estate Duchess. She traced back to the Manorpowis Duchess cow family and was giving 47kgs from an udder normally seen at the top of National Show. She now joins the herd of Messrs Hunter, Penrith.
Also selling for 2,150gns was Espland Masterful India consigned by Alan Cannon form Appleby. Sired by Masterful and bred from two Excellent dams she was purchased by the Robinson family from Brampton.
The Stowbeck Holstein herd owned by Len and Chris Wilson sold a number of outstanding milking heifers and cows and topped at 2,150gns for Stowbeck Honeybee Maiden who was bought by Messrs McCulloch, Stranraer. She was bred from five generations of Excellent or Very Good cows all with massive lifetime yields.
The sale started with an Elite Embryo Auction featuring embryos from many of the best cows in the Holstein and Jersey breed. Just over 100 embryos sold topping at 850gns to average £429 with the top price coming from the Luck-E Awesome Jacuzzi Red heifer.
