Milkers average £2804
The 2025 spring dairy sales kicked off with an amazing catalogue of Holstein cows and heifers. Several cows giving over 60kgs and many heifers giving over 40kgs sold to an average of £2804. Trade topped at 4,800gns with 36 animals selling for or above £3000. The show was sponsored by Finance For Farms and was judged by Isaac Lancaster from Gisburn. The Champion went to Espland Adorable Madge and was consigned by Alan Cannon from Espland Farm near Appleby who went on to sell for 3,000gns to the judge. She was sired by Stantons Adorable and was bred from a line of cows with massive production.
Standing Reserve Champion was Ploughlands Hanley Brenda who was consigned by the Gillespie family from Ploughlands Farm. She was sired by Siemers Hanley and bred from three generations of dams with over 70 ton of milk lifetime.
Topping the sale at 4,800gns was a beautiful heifer, Berryholme Cascade Erle (unshown) from the Wright family from near Kendal and was bought by the Donald family from Cumbria. Erle was sired by Regan-Danhof Cascade, her dam was an Excellent Bankroll and the grand dam was the 2015 Great Yorkshire show Champion. The Berryholme heifers sold to average £3990.
Peter Kemp from the Kingscaird herd in Abeerdeen sold six well bred heifers to average £3158 and topped at 4,600gns for a daughter of Boghill Glamour Santos. She was an ultra-stylish heifer bred by the Drointon herd and from nine generations of Excellent or Very Goods going back to Tri-Day Ashlyn. She sold for 4,600gns to David Coulthurst from Preston.
Peter Kemp also sold Aliann Attico Carmel for 4,000gns to David Coulthurst from Preston. Carmel had an amazing pedigree going back to her third dam that sold for 13,000gns in the 2011 Willsbro sale; her fourth dam was the $100,000 R-Z Baxter Carmel who sold in the Matriarchs of the Breed Sale in 2010.
There was an incredible group of cows to start the sale that averaged over £3000 and they topped at 3,300gns for Blythbridge Austin Ambrosia who was consigned by the Laird family from Blyth Farm. She was a super milk cow giving over 60kgs and will complete eight generations of animals to classify in the top grades going back to Tri-Day Ashlyn. Another cow from the same home giving 60kg, Blythbridge Applicable Trethelma sold for 3,200gns with both cows going to the Robinson family from Northumberland. This quality group of fifteen cows and heifers averaged over £3000.
The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on Thursday 3rd April and features 400 dairy cattle comprising freshly calved cows and heifers, dry cows, in calf heifers and bulling heifers.
