The Border & Lakeland Holstein Club sale once again attracted an outstanding selection of fresh cows and heifers, in-calf heifers and yearlings for their May sale. Buyers from across the UK packed the famous Borderway sale ring that saw the trade top at 3,400gns with the overall average for fresh cows coming to almost £3000. The sale included the dispersal sale of the Kingscaird Holstein young stock that topped at 2,800gns for a fancy in-calf heifer from the Melody cow family.
The show was judged by Nicole Kinloch from Walton Farm near Dumbarton and was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group. Her Overall Champion went to Wormanby Barolo Lustre who was consigned by the Hodgson family from near Carlisle. This powerful framed cow was fresh in her second, giving almost 60kgs daily and was bred from a phenomenal line of Excellent cows going back to the Canadian National Champion Idee Lustre. She topped the cow trade selling for 3,300gns to the Jackson family from Dumfries, the Wormanby herd sold another four cows and heifers to average £3176.
The Reserve Champion went to Newtonmoss Hanx Dairymaid who was consigned by the Fisher family from near Penrith. She was sired by Hanx P and was bred from an Excellent 94-pointed grand dam that gave over 100 ton lifetime. She sold for 2,900gns to the Jackson family from Dumfries. The Newtonmoss herd sold another four heifers to average £3071 including Newtonmoss Dalmore Noreen who sold for 3,200gns.
Topping the trade at 3,400gns was Langpark Tarmac Erle who was consigned by Matthew Bradley from Quebec in Co. Durham. She will complete ten generations of Excellent or Very Good cows, her fourth dam was the record breaker, Field of Dream Formation Erle who sold for 76,000gns in 2003. She was sired by Westcoast Tarmac and was bought by the Oldfield family from Lancashire. The Langpark sold another four heifers to average £3247.
The Logan family from Ayrshire sold ten super uddered heifers from their Holehouse herd, all giving large volumes of milk. They topped at 3,200gns for Holehouse Capone Present who was bought by the Jackson family from Dumfries. She was giving 42kgs and was bred from an Excellent 91 pointed dam with lactations over 13,000kgs.
The Wilson family from Skirwith Hall Farms near Penrith sold six quality heifers to average almost £3000 topping at 3,200gns for Stowbeck Renegade Jeanie who placed 2nd in the pre-sale show. She was sired by Renegade and was bred from a deep cow family, with four generations of Excellent or Very Goods all with massive lifetime production. This impressive heifer was bought by Mr Wannop from Lancashire.
The sale included the Production sale from the Urchany Holstein herd in Nairn that were reducing their high production Holstein herd. They topped at 2,600gns for Urchany Pursuit Pam who was due in August and was bred from an impressive line of dams all with big lifetime production.
The sale finished with the dispersal sale of the Kingscaird Pedigree Holstein youngstock owned by Peter Kemp from Aberdeen. This well-bred group of heifers were all bred from some of the Holstein breed’s most prolific cow families that included Apple, Adeen, Marq I , Barb, Jodie and Ashlyn. They topped at 2,800gns for an in-calf heifer sired by Arrow that traced back to a UK National Champion Shanael Gelpro Melody.
Heifer calves were in strong demand from the Kingscaird dispersal topping at 1,400gns for Kingscaird Jordy Marqi Red who went to the Espland herd. She was a February born calf bred from 17 generations of Excellent or Very Goods.
